Representing a new generation of designers in Japan, Kenya Hara (born 1958) pays tribute to his mentors, using long overlooked Japanese icons and images in much of his work. In a oeDesigning Designa, he impresses upon the reader the importance of a oeemptinessa in both the visual and philosophical traditions of Japan, and its application to design, made visible by means of numerous examples from his own work: Hara for instance designed the opening and closing ceremony programs for the Nagano Winter Olympic Games 1998. In 2001, he enrolled as a board member for the Japanese label MUJI and has considerably moulded the identity of this successful corporation as communication and design advisor ever since. Kenya Hara, alongside Naoto Fukasawa one of the leading design personalities in Japan, has also called attention to himself with exhibitions such as a oeRe-Design: The Daily Products of the 21st Centurya of 2000.

Designing Engineers

Designing Engineers

$4.44

The products of engineering design are everywhere, but who or what determines their form and function? Their surfaces are usually cold, seemingly objective, as if they existed outside of history of the technologies that are so much a part of our lives. Written by a practicing engineer, "Designing Engineers" yields clues to this mystery by probing deeply into the everyday world of engineering. In doing so, it reveals significant discrepancies between our ideal image of design as an instrumental process and the reality of design as a historically situated social process that is full of uncertainty and ambiguity. "Designing Engineers" describes the evolution of three disparate projects: an x-ray inspection system for airports, a photoprint machine, and a residential photovoltaic energy system. In each case, we are taken through the hallways and into the meeting rooms of the company to watch over the shoulders of engineers as they engage in the manifold individual and collective work that goes into designing a new product. Louis Bucciarelli was a consultant to one project and participated in the design process for the other two. In all three projects he examines both object – the way participants understood how things work – and process – the way they go about designing. What he learns is that engineering design is a social process that involves constant negotiation among many parties, not just engineers but marketing people, research scientists, accountants, and customers as well. One of the strengths of the book is the way Bucciarelli uses the very language of engineering discourse to uncover the many levels at which negotiation takes place. Designing, it turns out, is as much about agreeing on definitions as it is about producing "hard" artifacts.

Designing with Light

Numerous illustrations of technical tools, equipment, and exemplary play designs visualize designing with light for students

Designing Interfaces

Designing Interfaces

$5.16

Designing a good interface isn’t easy. Users demand software that is well-behaved, good-looking, and easy to use. Your clients or managers demand originality and a short time to market. Your UI technology — web applications, desktop software, even mobile devices — may give you the tools you need, but little guidance on how to use them well. UI designers over the years have refined the art of interface design, evolving many best practices and reusable ideas. If you learn these, and understand why the best user interfaces work so well, you too can design engaging and usable interfaces with less guesswork and more confidence. "Designing Interfaces" captures those best practices as design patterns — solutions to common design problems, tailored to the situation at hand. Each pattern contains practical advice that you can put to use immediately, plus a variety of examples illustrated in full color. You’ll get recommendations, design alternatives, and warnings on when not to use them. Each chapter’s introduction describes key design concepts that are often misunderstood, such as affordances, visual hierarchy, navigational distance, and the use of color. These give you a deeper understanding of why the patterns work, and how to apply them with more insight. A book can’t design an interface for you — no foolproof design process is given here — but "Designing Interfaces" does give you concrete ideas that you can mix and recombine as you see fit. Experienced designers can use it as a sourcebook of ideas. Novice designers will find a roadmap to the world of interface and interaction design, with enough guidance to start using these patterns immediately.

Designing Programmes

Designing Programmes

$29.05

Karl Gerstnera (TM)s work is a milestone in the history of design. One of his most important works is Designing Programmes, which is presented here in a new edition of the original 1964 publication. In four essays, the author provides a basic introduction to his design methodology. Instead of set recipes, the method suggests a model for design in the early days of the computer era. The intellectual models it proposes, however, continue to be useful today. What it does not purvey is cut-and-dried, true-or-false solutions or absolutes of any kind – instead, it develops fundamental principles in an innovative and future-oriented way. The book is especially topical and exciting in the context of current developments in computational design, which seem to hold out the possibility of programmed design. With many examples from the worlds of graphic and product design, music, architecture, and art, it inspires the reader to seize on the material, develop it further, and integrate it into his or her own work.

Designing Type

Designing Type

$26.97

As one of a graphic designer’s most essential tools, typefaces influence the appearance of visual print materials perhaps more than any other component. This essential book explains the processes behind creating and designing type. Author Karen Cheng discusses issues of structure, optical compensation, and legibility, with special emphasis given to the often overlooked relationships between letters and shapes in a font. The book is illustrated with numerous diagrams that demonstrate visual principles and letter construction, ranging from informal progress sketches to final type designs and diagrams. A wide range of classic and modern typefaces is analyzed, including those from many premier contemporary type foundaries. Introductory essays and diagrams emphasize the history of type, the primary systems of typeface classification, the two main proportional systems for type, the parts of a letter, the effects of new technology on design methodology, the optical illusions that affect density and balance in letterforms, and the differences in form between basic serif typestyles. The book provides detailed guidelines for creating serif and sans serif letters, numbers, punctuation, and accents. As design clients increasingly call for original and custom typefaces, "Designing Type" is a superb reference for both students and professional graphic designers.

Designing Audiences

Designing Audiences

$3.94

Each year the New York chapter of AIGA brings together emerging designers for Fresh Dialogue, a panel discussion that provides a forum to present and talk about work, thoughts, and ideas. Designing Audiences takes a fresh look at graphic design through the eyes of three young designers, all of whom have embraced a media landscape dominated by user-centric social networking sites such as MySpace, Flickr, and YouTube. Playing with the notion of designer as visual interlocutor, they craft conversations where viewers become participants and the relationship between design and its consumers is radically redefined. This lively Fresh Dialogue volume includes designers from a variety of media: Stefan Bucher with his wildly popular Daily Monster series; Eric Rodenbeck with the Flickr mapping brainchild Mappr as well as live data visualizations at Digg Labs; and Katie Salen with Karaoke Ice, the traveling karaoke ice cream truck. Designing Audiences is a stimulating and entertaining discussion of the changing role of the designer in the era of constant feedback. The moderator is popular online personality Ze Frank, creator of the web-based ‘the show with zefrank, ‘ stand-up comic, and soon-to-go-Hollywood charmer.

Many have never been seen before and are exclusive to this book Both inspirational and practical, Designing Gardens is an illustrated source book of garden ideas and plans from one of the outstanding landscape designers of our day. The first part of the book explores Arabella Lennox-Boyd’s philosophy, looking at how to establish the structure of a garden design — enclosing garden rooms, opening up garden space and using vertical structures to best effect — and how to clothe that structure with beautiful and appropriate plants. The second part of the book looks in detail at more than 20 very different gardens, ranging from the broad canvas of a sweeping romantic garden to the understated detail of a minimalist rooftop. Design ideas for everything from paving and pergolas to perennial plantings burst from every page, captured in Andrew Lawson’s atmospheric images and Lennox-Boyd’s plans.

Designing with Grasses

Designing with Grasses

$30.13

Ornamental grasses provide glorious visual impact and a dynamic sense of movement. They are easy to care for, provide excellent wildlife habitats, and are sustainable. Neil Lucas captures all this in a practical, accessible, and beautifully illustrated book that appeals to gardeners who want a contemporary garden without too much effort. "Designing with Grasses" looks at how grasses perform in the wild to help readers choose the right plants for their garden. A section is dedicated to recreating the grasslands found in prairies, steppes, and meadows in a backyard setting. Additional design chapters challenge conventional divisions about planted and non-planted areas of the garden. Putting the right plant in the right place is crucial to the creation of sustainable plantings, and Lucas picks for grasses for particular situations are especially helpful. Environment-friendly options for green roofs, erosion control and habitat restoration along with alternatives to lawn grasses are also included.

Managing as Designing

Managing as Designing

$61.75

"Managing as Designing" explores "the design attitude," a new focus for analysis and decision making for managers that draws on examples of decision making and leadership in architecture, art, and design. Based on a series of conference papers given at the opening of the Peter B. Lewis Building (designed by Frank Gehry) at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University, the book includes keynote speeches from Frank Gehry and Karl Weick. The premise of this book is that managers should act not only as decision makers, but also as designers. Though decision and design are inextricably linked in management action, managers and scholars have too long emphasized the decision face of management over the design face. In a series of essays from a multitude of disciplines, the authors develop a theory of the design attitude in contrast to the more traditionally accepted and practiced decision attitude. The book will appeal primarily to scholars of management theory and organization strategy and managers, with many contributions from a variety of academic backgrounds including architecture, sociology, design, history, choreography, strategy, economics, music, and accounting. There is a potential for strong crossover appeal to these groups, especially to those people and groups interested in design and product development.
